Rockwool History

The Rockwool journey truly began in the 1930s as gravel pits around a small Danish Island as well as a finishing net factory and sand-lime brick factory. In 1935 they discovered a production of mineral wool was possible, using the companies stone deposits for stone wool production. At this time most houses were not insulated or energy efficient and there was a space in the market for stone and rock wool following the production of glass wool around two years prior. By the 1960s Rockwool had adapted and improved its methods to meet product requirements and regulations and was successfully producing stone wool products in over six countries. Rockwool now has factories in 14 countries and representation in over 30 countries.
At the heart of Rockwool’s mission is to help tackle problems facing society today by carrying out scientific research into social and economic issues as well as carrying out practical interventions. Rockwool insulation includes insulation rolls, batts, and slabs and can be installed throughout properties including ceilings, pitched roofs, external walls, internal walls, separating walls and floors, and timber suspended ground floors.

Rockwool FAQs

What is Rockwool made of?

Rockwool insulation is a rock-based mineral fibre insulation made up of basalt rock and recycled slag. Basalt rock is a volcanic rock and slag is a by-product of the steel industry. These minerals are melted and spun into fibres to form rolls, batts, and slabs.

Can you touch Rockwool products?

When skin comes into contact with rockwool fibres, it can cause temporary itching. This can uncomfortable but is not harmful. It is recommended that protective clothing such as gloves and long sleeves are worn before handling and touching rockwool products to avoid irritation.

What is the difference between the Rockwool products within the RW range?

Each Rockwool RW slab is made up of the same material and is often available in the same sizes and thicknesses, or they can be doubled up to meet a required thickness. The main difference in the slabs is the density of each product. For example, RW4 slabs have a density of 80kg/m3 and RW5 slabs have a density of 100kg/m3. Please consult your builder or architect if you are unsure of the density you require for your project.

What is the difference between stone wool and glass wool?

Stone wall or rock wool is manufactured from deposits of naturally occurring volcanic rock whereas glass wool or fibreglass is manufactured from silica or glass cullet. Both glass wool and rock wool products are also known as mineral wool, which refers to insulation made from minerals such as glass and rock.

What happens if Rockwool insulation gets wet?

Rockwool insulation will not absorb water into the body of the insulation, it will simply drain the water away. The materials are inorganic which means it is rot proof and provides no food source or growth support for funghi, mold, or bacteria.
