Knauf History more in-depth
Knauf began in 1932 as two brothers, Karl and Alfons Knauf, secured the right to mine gypsum deposits in Germany. After just a year their first Gypsum factory was built. Over the years Knauf has expanded and transformed to become a worldwide corporation delivering products and services including building materials and gypsum-based products and boards, thermal and sound insulation, limestone products, chalk, cement and plant engineering. Knauf has grown from family-owned small business to a global leader with over 26,500 employees worldwide, renowned for their reliability, sustainable products, and superior performance.
Knauf is an industry leader when it comes to sustainable construction with a goal to reach net-zero carbon by 2045, five years head of the Paris agreement and to cut CO2 emissions in half in less than 10 years from now, in time for Knauf’s 100th birthday in 2032. Knauf’s products range from plasterboards to jointing compounds, to accessories suitable for a diverse selection of applications and building systems.
Knauf Plasterboards
Knauf plasterboards are a drywall product made up of a premium gypsum core with ivory paper facings on each side. The 2400mm by 1200mm boards are available in thicknesses of 12.5mm and 15mm with the option of a squared or tapered edge. The 12.5mm thick boards are also available in a tapered edge in sizes 3000mm x 1200mm, 2700mm x 1200mm, and 1800mm x 900mm. Knauf wallboards can be installed within ceiling applications, steel and timber frame walls, partition walls, and below rafter level, often as one of the final stages to completing the walls or surface. Knauf plasterboard wall boards are lightweight and easy to cut and install. The tapered edge boards can be butted together and skimmed, and the squared edges can be tightly butted together and plastered, making decorating and finishes touches easy for builders and DIY enthusiasts alike. Other plasterboard products include fire panels, vapour panels, moisture panels, and soundshield plus plasterboards.
Knauf Loft Roll 44
Knauf loft roll 44 is made up of glass mineral wool and partially cut into 2 widths of 570mm or 3 widths of 380mm which means less cutting is required when installing as the rolls are combi cut. The thicknesses available include 100mm, 150mm, 170mm, and 200mm, with a thermal conductivity of 0.044W/mK. Loft roll 44 can be installed in between the joists within the pitched roof at ceiling level. Unlike standard glass wool insulation materials, Knauf loft roll 44 combi cut is designed with comfort in mind as its new technology avoids and lessens irritation, although protective measuring such as clothing and goggles is still recommended. The flexible rolls can be friction fit between the joists within the loft space to avoid heat from rising and escaping out of the roof. These rolls achieve a Euroclass A1 fire rating and will not contribute to the spread of fire. Loft Roll 44 is rot proof, and will not contribute to the growth of mold, fungi or bacteria.
Knauf Dritherm Cavity Slabs
The Knauf Dritherm Cavity slab range offers a selection of three glass mineral wool slabs manufactured using Knauf’s innovative ECOSE technology to minimise irritably. The Dritherm Cavity Slab 32 is 1200mm by 455mm in thicknesses of 85mm, 100mm, 125mm, and 150mm. The 32 Dritherm slabs have a thermal conductivity of 0.032W/mK. The Dritherm Cavity Slab 37 is 1200mm by 455mm in thicknesses of 50mm, 65mm, 75mm, 85mm, 100mm, 125mm, and 150mm. The 37 slabs have a thermal conductivity of 0.037W/mK. The Dritherm 32 slab has the slightly better thermal performance of the product range, however different application methods and areas of application may require a higher or lower rate of heat transfer, a builder, contractor, or architect can help to decide which thermal conductivity your project requires.
Knauf Dritherm Cavity Slabs are installed within the first stages of masonry construction in between the inner and outer leaf of the walls. They are full-fill masonry cavity walls slabs meaning the slabs will fill the space between the inner and outer leaf with no air gap. These Euroclass A1 rated reaction to fire slabs will minimise the spread of fire between walls and buildings.
Knauf Acoustic Rolls
Knauf Acoustic mineral wool rolls are manufactured using ECOSE technology for use within new and refurbished walls and floor applications, designed to improve walls and introduce sound absorbing features. The rolls are available in thicknesses of 25mm, 50mm, 75mm, and 100mm and available 1200mm wide with ready to cut divides at 600mm. The depth of the rolls should match depth of the joists or frames. The acoustic rolls are excellent sound absorbers and can be installed within timber and metal frame applications, stud partitions, and floors between rafters to reduce sound levels travelling throughout the building and between rooms. As well as sound absorption qualities the acoustic rolls also have a thermal conductivity of 0.044W/mK which means a more temperature-controlled home or work environment. The roll is tightly compressed and packed for ease of transportation and handling due to their size and light weight, once opened the rolls will return to their anticipated thickness.
Knauf Frametherm Range
The Frametherm range consists of a Frametherm 32 Roll, Frametherm 35 Roll, and Frametherm 40 Roll. Each of the rolls are named with their thermal conductivity in mind, the 32 Roll has a thermal conductivity of 0.032W/mK and is available in thicknesses of 90mm and 140mm, the 35 Roll has a thermal conductivity of 0.035W/mK and is available in a 90mm thickness, and the 40 Roll has a thermal conductivity of 0.040W/mK and is available in thicknesses of 90mm and 140mm. The entire range can be friction fit between studs and are easily split as per requirement in either widths of 2x570mm or widths of 3x380mm, meaning minimal cutting is required. These rolls will improve the thermal quality of your home or office space by creating a more temperature-controlled environment with cooler summers and warmer winters. The rolls can be installed within timber or metal frame walls and pitched roofs at rafter levels.
Knauf Rocksilk Slabs

Rockwool RWA45 and RS45 are both insulation slabs made up of rock mineral wool, have a thermal conductivity of 0.035W/mK, and a density of 45kg/m3. The difference between these two materials is the manufacturers, RWA45 is manufactured by Rockwool and RS45 is manufactured by Knauf.
Will the insulation expand one unpackaged?
Yes, glass or stone wool insulation materials can be unpacked and simply shaken out to expand and reach their stated thickness. The materials are compressed for ease of storage and transportation and designed to decompress and restore its thickness once unpacked.
Is Knauf Insulation Itchy?
Knauf insulation is manufactured using ECOSE technology, which is a bio-based binder which contains no formaldehyde or phenol. Products made using ECOSE Technology are soft to touch and generate low levels of dust, which in turn reduces itchiness. Although Knauf is manufactured with comfort in mind, the material may still feel slightly irritable when handling or installed and protective clothing, such as clothing, mask, and gloves, is still recommended when handling, cutting and installing.
Is mineral wool pink?
No, mineral wool is not pink and is often a pale brown colour or yellow. Pink mineral wool also known as pink insulation or pink fibreglass can be found in other countries such as America or Australia.
